The area now known as Sandy Bay was originally home to the Mouheneenner people. Sandy Bay was known for its long beach, where horse races were held in the early 1800s. By the early 20th century, it had become an integral part of Hobart's urban growth, officially becoming part of the City of Hobart in 1914.
